Large Group Learning
History is created from previous actions and experiences of people who lived before us, so to make my History classroom come alive for my students there will be days where we have large group learning. In large group learning:
  • The purpose is not only for the students to actively learn from one another, but for me to fill in any questions that might be presented, and also provide a chance for me to learn from my students as well.
  • The students will respectfully discuss/debate the topic or primary document presented to them that day.
  • Every student is expected to actively engage in the day's discussion.
  • To make sure every student contributes to the discussion, each student will be given a small token chip. Once a student speaks, the student will be able to give their token to the teacher. Students will not be able to leave the classroom without giving the teacher their token. Also, the students who have already given their input will be able to speak again after giving away their token; this system is simply implemented to encourage everyone to give their opinion.
  • The students will arrange their desks from the normal "row" arrangement to the new arrangement pictured below in this section.

Small Group Learning
Students will be expected to work on assignments during class time, and on some occasions our class will implement small group learning during these assignments. Small group learning:
  • The purpose - like in large group learning, the students are given a chance to learn from one another and develop social management/responsibility skills.
  • During small group learning, the students will come together in teacher assigned groups (no more than 5 per group) to achieve a common goal for the day.Groups are subject to change throughout the school year based on the teacher's preferences.
    • *Each group member is responsible for covering the material content. No one student should take responsibility for doing all the group's work.
    • Facilitator - keeping the group on task and avoiding any conversations not focused on the material
    • Time keeper - making sure the assignment is moving along and will be finished once group work time is over
    • Speaker - will share the groups information with the teacher and the rest of the class
    • Note taker - writing down all the important information needed for the assignment
  • Below is an example of the seating chart on small group learning days.

*Remember students: All Rules and Consequences will apply to both Large and Small Learning. See Rules and Consequences tab if you need a refresher!
*We will cover proper group procedures during day 1 of class. These procedures will include discussion of group work responsibilities and how the groups will be set up.
